Samsung Electronics and LG Display discuss cooperation again, purchase LCD panel

According to foreign media reports, in view of the fact that Samsung Electronics is currently in the transition period for the production of next-generation display panels, Samsung Electronics is negotiating with LG Display to purchase display panels. Industry sources said that Samsung Electronics and LG Display may soon reach a supply agreement for LCD TV panels.

Earlier, Samsung Display, a display manufacturer under Samsung Electronics, announced that it would stop producing LCD screens from next year and accelerate the development of quantum dot (QD) displays.

Industry insiders initially predicted that Samsung Electronics may purchase LCD screens from Chinese companies such as Guoxing Optoelectronics, BOE and Sharp. Analysts expect that if Samsung Electronics and LG Display reach a deal, the value of LG Display’s supply will reach between 1 trillion and 2 trillion won (approximately 5.7 billion to 11.4 billion yuan). LG Display plans to provide a large LCD display supply at its manufacturing plant in Guangzhou.

Samsung and LG are competitors in the TV industry. The former is in a leading position in the QLED TV field, and the latter is in the OLED TV field. But history shows that the two sides can cooperate. In 2017, after Sharp suddenly decided to cut the supply to Samsung, Samsung Electronics and LG Display signed a cooperation agreement to obtain 65-inch and 75-inch LCD monitor supplies.
